    Subject Leader: Mr Nordon

At Cheetwood Primary School, PE plays an important role in supporting pupils’ physical health, confidence and well-being. We want every child to enjoy being active, feel included and develop skills that will stay with them for life.

From Early Years through to Year 6, pupils learn a wide range of physical skills and sporting vocabulary. We encourage children to understand what they are learning, apply these skills in different activities and talk confidently about their performance.

Our PE curriculum focuses on helping pupils to:

    • Develop strong fundamental movement skills that improve year by year
    • Learn transferable skills that can be used across many sports
    • Understand how physical activity helps keep their bodies healthy
    • Take part enthusiastically and enjoy being active
    • Build confidence, resilience and positive attitudes to sport

PE and school sport have a high profile at Cheetwood. All pupils take part in at least two hours of high-quality PE each week, and over the year experience a broad and balanced range of activities, including:

    • Games
    • Athletics
    • Gymnastics
    • Dance
    • Outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA)
    • Swimming

Across the year, pupils also enjoy themed activity weeks and special sporting events that allow them to try new experiences and develop teamwork, resilience and confidence. These opportunities support pupils’ wider personal development and encourage healthy lifestyles.

In Year 6, pupils attend a residential visit to Ghyll Head in the Lake District, where they take part in adventurous activities such as orienteering, canoeing, rock scrambling and caving.

During the summer term, we also run our annual Healthy Schools Week, which promotes physical activity through a mixture of competitive and non-competitive challenges.

Talented and enthusiastic pupils are guided towards local sports clubs and competitions so they can continue developing their skills beyond school.

We work with specialist coaches throughout the year who support lesson delivery and provide valuable training for staff. Teachers carefully plan lessons so that all areas of the PE curriculum are covered across the year, ensuring pupils experience a wide variety of sports and activities.

We also offer a range of free lunchtime and after-school clubs, run by staff and sports coaches.

Children who attend clubs may also represent the school in city-wide competitions, helping to build confidence, teamwork and enjoyment of sport.

We measure the success of our PE curriculum through pupils’ participation, engagement and confidence, as well as their developing physical skills and teamwork.

Because of our carefully planned and inclusive approach:

    • Pupils enjoy PE and develop a love of physical activity
    • Children grow in confidence and resilience
    • Teamwork, leadership and fair play are promoted
    • Pupils understand the importance of staying active and healthy
    • Children are encouraged to continue sport beyond primary school
At Cheetwood Primary School, we are proud that our PE curriculum supports pupils to become healthy, confident and motivated individuals who enjoy being active, now and in the future.

Department for Education KS2 Swimming Reporting
At Cheetwood, we are very proud of the progress our pupils make in swimming. Children arrive with different levels of experience, and we make sure every child is supported from their own starting point.

Our swimming programme is inclusive and carefully planned so that all pupils can build skills, confidence and a positive attitude towards the water. Lessons focus on safety, technique and enjoyment, helping children feel comfortable and motivated to improve.

Through high-quality teaching and encouragement, pupils overcome early worries and make strong progress towards national swimming expectations. This reflects our commitment to ensuring every child leaves Cheetwood with this essential life skill and the confidence to stay active and safe in the future.
