In Year 1, children take part in the Phonics Screening Check, a short national assessment that helps us understand how well they are learning to read using phonics.
The check takes place in June and is completed one-to-one with a familiar adult in school. Children are asked to read a list of real and made-up words using the phonics sounds they have learnt. It is designed to feel low-pressure and supportive, and most children see it as just another reading activity.
The results show whether a child is working at the expected level for their age. If a child does not meet the expected standard in Year 1, they will continue to receive extra phonics support and will have another opportunity to take the check in Year 2.
We use phonics assessment information to:
monitor progress in reading
identify children who may need extra support
ensure teaching is matched to pupils’ needs
celebrate children’s achievements
We share outcomes with parents at the end of the year and continue to support all children to become confident, fluent readers.
The table above shows the percentage of pupils who met the expected standard in the Phonics Screening Check. This compares outcomes nationally, across Manchester and at Cheetwood Primary School.
In Year 1, our results are in line with the national average and above the Manchester average, showing that most children are developing secure early reading skills through our phonics teaching.
The Year 2 figure includes children who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1 and retook the check. These outcomes can vary each year depending on the cohort, but they help us identify where additional support is needed and ensure that all children continue to build confidence in reading.
We use this information carefully to review our phonics provision, celebrate progress and provide extra support where needed. Our aim is for every child to become a confident, fluent reader as they move through school.
